SCORM stands for Shareable Content Object Reference Model; essentially, SCORM created a standard that allows for content to be exchanged. SCORM e-learning enables you upload and publish courses developed elsewhere on whatever LMS you have in place.
Because SCORM e-learning standardizes the code of the content objects, administrators can choose SCORM content based on the needs of their learners and make those courses available in their own SCORM-compliant LMS. This allows for more learning opportunities for everyone!
Although we already touched on why SCORM content delivery was a great advancement in online education, not everyone takes full advantage of what SCORM can do. This is especially true in continuing medical education. SCORM e-learning frees content authors to produce medical education that can be delivered on any compliant LMS. Without the limitations of a single LMS platform, you can pursue the latest medical information and offer the most up-to-date courses.
However, in order to take advantage of SCORM e-learning, you need an LMS that supports SCORM. It’s not hard to find learning management systems that support SCORM, but it is also not a given. Be sure to check SCORM compatibility before choosing which LMS to implement for continuing medical education.
